Today was a rare day: the kids returned to school after spring break and I got the day off for Cesar Chavez Day. I’m not quite sure why Cal Poly observes Cesar Chavez Day and the local public schools do not, but I guess that happens when something is not quite a national holiday, or, inexplicably, even a California holiday.
Today was also a big day for the kindergarteners, who got to go on a field trip to a special kid-friendly symphony performance. This meant I had to pack a sack lunch for Lily. Sack lunches are a special challenge, since everything needs to be disposable and shelf stable, or safe to eat after several hours without an ice pack. My usual sack lunch strategy is to start with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and then add the types of pre-packaged things that I tend to avoid like expensive [somewhat healthy] granola bars and juice boxes.
